Off topic AND on topic: No free passes for this election

I don’t send out political screeds. This is my first and hopefully my last. But I feel strongly about this election, so strongly I’m risking alienating a lot of people here. Please, consider what I’ve written. Send it out to the world. Link to this page. Send it to friends and relatives and strangers. Cut it, edit it, reword it. Post it on blogs, squeeze it into comments. Send it back to those rumor-mongering eMails. Whatever you can do. Thanks. –Ed

No free passes this election

Recently a friend told me he’s voting “none of the above” for President. My blood boiled. I’ve heard others planning to do the same, write in somebody irrelevant or just skip voting altogether. My blood boils and my head spins. What are they thinking?

Does anyone really think this country would be the disaster it is today if the election had been different in 2000? That we’d be in the same financial, military, and moral mess?

The days of pretending who sits in the White House doesn’t matter – those days are gone.

Voter disgust is rooted in our eternal, nastier-than-poison-oak campaigns and the realization that the candidates on offer are flawed. Well, duh? These guys are human, folks! Of course they are flawed! Despite what the hacks and spinmeisters want you to believe, we do not vote for the lesser of two evils in America. We vote for the better of two men.

If you think Senator McCain might make a good leader, look again. Whatever man he once was, he is no longer. His judgment is clouded, his behavior is erratic, and he has lost his moral compass. John McCain is exhausted; watch him. The campaign is literally killing him. And if he doesn’t last long in office? We will be stuck with another small-minded big-state governor who knows little and cares less about the world.

And Senator Obama? Well, he’s not the Messiah, you can toss that one out. He is a politician, by all accounts an intelligent, thoughtful, outward looking one, insatiably interested in the country and the world. And he seems to be about as ethical as you can find in Washington these days. Obama’s campaign is the best-run organization in the country right now – better than any government, better than any businesses – the polar opposite of McCain’s. I take that as a good sign.

Can a President Obama “fix” America? Of course not. No one person can. It’s going to take all of us. But we need a leader, one who can inspire and, well, lead. And Obama has a better chance of steering us in the right direction than McCain. Be honest: McCain has no chance at all.

Four more years like the last eight and we just may see the end of the 232 year amazing-if-flawed experiment that is the United States. I’m not talking apocalypse, I’m talking history. Nations as large and complex in their time as we now are have collapsed for less. Four more years of decline will leave us a bankrupt failed state, retaining only the jingoism and weapons of the American experiment. We will be post-Soviet Russia without the oil.

If you do not vote, if you waste your vote on “none of the above” or Paris Hilton or Nader or McCain-Palin you do not get to say “don’t blame me” as the country rots. As they say in Texas, that dog don’t hunt. You will be to blame. And you know it.

Think, Americans! Ignore the talking heads, the rumors, and think!

Please. It’s our country.

There are no free passes for the election of 2008.

Thanks for posting this Ed. I think I’ll write a similar post referencing yours. My blood pressure hit critical point when and otherwise educated, intelligent and aware friend of mine said he refuses to vote because he “follows the teachings of Henry David Thoreau”! If there was ever a watershed election where all thinking peoples MUST vote, which is the very minimum effort democracy demands of us, THIS IS IT!

Nothing seems to be easier than seeing someone whom you can help but not helping.
I suggest we start giving it a try. Give love to the ones that need it.
    God will appreciate it.
